Editorial Shoot { Gov Thomas Bennett House }

In late January, I had the pleasure in participating in an editorial shoot at the Gov Thomas Bennett House.  Built in 1852, the Gov Thomas Bennett House is one of Charleston’s historic gems.  The home is a lovely example of Federal architecture.  The Gov Thomas Bennett House boasts of spacious windows, intricately carved moldings, and a stunning flying staircase.  From its iconic porch to wrought iron details along the grounds, the Gov Thomas Bennett House is a unique and timeless venue for any event or wedding.

For the editorial shoot, soft romantic colors such as powder blue and blush pink were used.  This palette paired well against the natural stone and greenery backdrops of Gov Thomas Bennett House’s courtyard.  A manicured lawn offers a lush, natural setting for a ceremony.  While the rest of the courtyard is well-suited for mingling and dancing. The interior is a great option for a bride getting ready.  The upstairs rooms are washed in natural sunlight, which any photographer loves!

Though a sunny day, it was chilly with temperatures in the 40s.  No one would guess from the stunning work of the models.  Outdoors they would wrap themselves up and have Hot Hands in-between shots.  Such troopers!  The weather definitely contributed to cozy posing, trying to keep themselves warm.  But that is always some of my favorite poses as they reflect a sweet intimacy and help facilitate the best candids.

I used this editorial shoot as the perfect excuse to photograph with only film.  Though I did bring a digital mirrorless camera with me, it luckily stayed in my bag.  I used Fuji 400H film for most of the outdoor photos.  I also had Kodak Portra 160 on hand for the brightest daylight and Portra 800 for low light interior shots.  Fortunately is was a sunny day, which means ideal circumstances for photographing with film.

I had a blast collaborating with some of Charleston’s best vendors.  I hope you enjoy some of my favorite images from this editorial shoot at Gov Thomas Bennett House!
